Vincentian Journey to Serve Workshop
Orleans April 2016

Table 1:

Communication and ONRC Meetings (Kristine Paul & Frank Boerboom)
-  For those without computer access, use RTC to get equipment [computer] --We need to be computerized
-  Annual reports – more feedback on accuracy
  • Formsareunclear
  • Moredetailedinformationguidesneeded
-  CRA: not registered as charities; are there multiple interpretations?
-  Meetings have evolved positively
-  Love Friday: tours, presentation, social
-  Need proper procedures (i.e. credential report: number of voters, number of presidents;
introduce the head table; changes to agenda must happen before the approval
-  Treasurer’s report needs to be emailed ahead of time.

Table 2:

Communication and ONRC Meetings (Sarah Davidson):
-  Most communication is done via emails, however some conferences have a designated
communicator to phone those without internet/email (*good, considerate practice for all)
-  Members do not always get information from ONRC – at best it’s only spring/fall meeting
information. Members typically only get notices of meetings/agenda/minutes for their
conference.
-  Should have a general members email group so that they can receive messages too. The
unsubscribe option could be used by any who do not wish to receive these emails.
  • Alternatively, include a note to forward onto members.
-  Love the new ONRC email format.
-  Requesting a Members Peer-to-Peer, even to have as a 6-month or one year trial to judge how
much it’s used
-  Treasurers’ Peer-to-Peer, especially useful around year-end reporting and tax season
-  Facebook is good for stores and social justice, but there would not be much use for general
society work.
ONRC Meetings:
-  Like that the location changes each time
-  Likes the table assignments, encourages people to talk with those outside of the
communities/comfort zones
-  Enjoying the workshop format – meetings have improved over the past five years, keep getting
better, so please don’t go back to the old format
-  Could send an email out now asking what members would like to see/discuss/learn more about
at the fall meeting.
-  Recommend conferences to include these meetings in the budget to encourage people to
attend

Table 3:

New Member Orientation (Judith Nunn)
-  Everyone at the table had a spiritual advisor
-  Engage, Educate, Recruit
-  Not many went to modules online
-  Create a check list of what new members need to do before home visits begin
-  Regional trainers – don’t know what is available
-  Training on new projects too (not just SSVP/home visits)
-  Build awareness of events, outreach activities, speak at church

Table 4:

New Member Orientation (Cory Wink)
-  Using the Rule Book, modules, etc.
-  Learn by doing
-  Regional trainers (not available in all areas)
-  Website not easy to navigate/find what you’re looking for

Table 5:

New Member Orientation (Paul Reansbury)
-  Most are accessing the national modules for orientation
-  Ongoing support from regional trainers
-  Using Rule Book to review at meetings, give copy to new members
-  No new training needed, know their duties
-  ONRC to support conference members to be more willing to accept president role
-  Either has spiritual advisor or rotates spiritual reflection duties

Table 6:

Outreach (Linda Alexander)
-  Food drives, food banks, build relationship with schools, canvas, raise awareness
-  Meeting with parish school reps, principals, parent councils, student councils, retired teachers
-  Make SSVP presentations to the schools
-  Force mix of adults/seniors/youth
-  Interfaith members within conference
-  Collaborate – joining round tables, work with CWL/KofC
-  3 parishes joined together to make one conference
-  Ozanam Fund, Prison Ministry, RESP

Table 7:

Outreach (Anita Reansbury)
-  Wanting to tie into youth/school system
  • Theywillbringtheirparents/theirfriends
-  Working with other community organizations
  • Support/agreetodisagree/notduplicateservices
-  CWL/KofC ... SSVP lacks access to legal advice, direction, structure, Roberts Rules of Order

Table 8:

Store Managers (Sue Armitage)
-  Need consistent branding – all stores are different, no consistency
-  Need support from all levels of SSVP
-  Wants their own budget (i.e. Send product to Ottawa from Peterborough)
-  Wants face to face meetings to network
-  Give Store Managers freedom to act in the best interest of the stores/SSVP

Table 9:

Functioning in Accordance of the Rule (Dora Johnston)
-  Importance of ONRC meetings for Presidents, for leadership direction, training, mentorships
-  Info on website available to presidents
-  Human resource issues – maybe volunteers don’t share SSVP values
-  Old ideas and new ideas promo with new and past presidents

Table 10:

Functioning in Accordance to the Rule (Pegg Leroux)
-  Feeling like there’s a lack of direction/guidance for new presidents – like just handing over the
Rule Book
-  There should be a celebration of the new executive, with more of a presentation of Rule Book
-  Looking at how to help each other – come together to rejuvenate
  • Meetings after Mass, then all go out to breakfast together (about picking the right time to meet)
-  Looking for leadership and strength from a past president team (and similarly with a spiritual advisor team to help/advise lay persons in the role)

Table 11:

Youth (Shelby Mulder)
- Shared same ideas as Table 12.

Table 12:

Youth (Lily for Sophia Mutuc) Focused on Youth Recruitment
-  Start small, get one young person involved, then have them bring their friends
-  Face to face invites work best, not paper ... keep it social
-  Let the youth shine – share their views
