What accomplishments/success has the program had in the January to December 2021 period ?

All Northern communities had continued assistance from their team leaders. Some communities received a sea container while others received crates of food. COVID continued to create inconveniences both in the north and for the south with the gathering supplies.
The Kivalliq Inuit Association continued their financial support for the marine shipment of 3 sea containers that crossed on the final crossing in late September.

What opportunities are there to focus on this fiscal year ?

Foremost the welcoming of a new Community to our Nunavut Family.  The hamlet of Coral Harbour has been adopted by Hamilton/Hamilton West Particular Council . They will sending a 20’ sea container in late September to this our newest community.
It is my hope to return to the North this fall to meet with Sr. Dorica in Chesterfield, Fr Daniel in Naujaat, and possibly visit in Coral Harbour to begin our first face-to -face meet and greet.

What challenges has the program encountered in the past year?

There continued to be “trucking issues” during this year for the South. The availability of food items was  slowed rather drastically.
Rising costs – from the sea container costs, to food, logistics and gasoline increases. It is hopeful that the 2022 budgetary costs will see only slight increases.
The community of Naujaat has for the past 2 summers received only 1 sea container versus two.  Plus, the community endured many off-sets due to COVID.  The community needed further food assistance. An Emergency Food relief cheque was sent to Fr Daniel enabling him to purchase additional food for his community during the Christmas period.
It was also hoped that a renewed contact would be made with Agnico-Eagle for marine support with Rankin Inlet.  Agnico -Eagle was closed for most of 2021. Thus, they are working exceedingly hard to re-establish strength with their own operations.

How will we deal with these challenges this fiscal year ?

Continued association and contact with the (KIA), Kivalliq Inuit Association for their financial support for the marine crossing of the communities within their jurisdiction.
Continued transparency with all our Vincentian members in Ontario ensuring everyone of the North of 60 needs and expenditures.
Concerning Availability : Gathering of food items is easier to obtain although more costly this year.

Financial Information

The total expenses for 2021 were lower than in previous years ONLY because 4 rather than 9 sea containers were sent to the North, due to COVID.  Three Kitikmeot communities were still being heavily assisted through COVID relief.  In the Kivalliq region 2 communities received 1 container rather than the usual two containers.
