Canada Day 2019(July 1 2019)
Prayer for Canada
Canada Day invites me to reflect on who I am, where I came from and where I am going, as an individual but also as a citizen, a Catholic and a Vincentian. Each of us carries our inheritance with a serious joy. (Inspired by Psalm 72: ‘He shall have dominion from sea to sea…’) O Lord, we gather in your presence on this Canada Day. We read of your ‘dominion’ in Psalm 72 and we claim this promise – that your will would prevail in this land. We pray for the movement of the Holy Spirit across this nation and for the work of the church in every city and village. O Lord, make us mindful of your generosity, and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honourable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride, arrogance and from every evil course of action. Make us, who come from many different backgrounds and countries, a united people – one in purpose and vision. Give our government a spirit of wisdom and compassion that there may be justice and peace in our land. When times are prosperous, lead us to thanksgiving, and when times are troubled, lead us to a deepening trust in you. All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (Adapted from a prayer of Trinity Anglican Church, Barrie ON) I am the proud daughter of an immigrant which demands that I declare myself on the side of all who come to Canada from other lands. As a Vatican II convert I applaud every modernization in my Church and I love Pope Francis’ bold support of all who struggle. My commitment to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul affirms all this; learning more about those who came before me assures me that being informed and involved in political issues in my country and my world is the right thing to do.
God keep our land glorious and free
