Recognizing Exemplary Student Volunteerism

Supporting Council: Cambridge Particular Council

Program details:
It is widely known that students are in need of funds when they move from the secondary world to their post-secondary options whether it be university, college, or workplace.

This program operates by offering this award of $250 per student at the School Board Level. Each one of our five secondary schools within the Waterloo District School Board is invited to contact our society with the name of one of their students who has shown exemplary volunteerism within: the school community, within their local community, within their local parish community, or otherwise. We are not specific about the requirements but instead allow the school to pick the student as each school is aware of the outstanding students in their midst. Also, students must submit a log of their community hours and explain where they worked and in what capacity so the school has a tangible record of volunteerism from which to select the students.

The schools are very supportive of this award. The students are appreciative.

This process has enriched our spirituality with the knowledge that:
  • we have assisted a student as he/she embarks on the next stage of their life
  • we have significantly raised the level of visibility of our society in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge by having the award presented to the student at their graduation ceremony which is attended by their family, parents, grandparents and the whole school community
  • we have supported the Catholic education system
  • we have planted the seeds of volunteerism with our society (hopefully) with the next generation
